IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR JOB TITLE: Director of Laboratory

Position Summary

The Phlebotomist collects good quality venous and capillary specimens on patients of all ages, and cord blood gasses from cord segments. The Phlebotomist must be able to prioritize collections and deliver samples to the laboratory within appropriate time frames.

Essential Functions

  • Performs phlebotomy procedures to include bleeding times, blood cultures, heel sticks, venipunctures, capillary blood gasses, finger sticks, and cord blood gasses an all appropriate age groups
  • Performs secretarial functions to include greeting and admitting customers, answering of telephones, verification and ordering of laboratory tests, and reporting of lab results by phone and fax
  • Performs collection of Drug Screens and Breath Alcohol Collections for medical and occupational requests
  • Prioritizes collections according to urgent requests and delivers samples within an appropriate time frame
  • Instructs patients and families on proper collection of stool, urine, and sputum specimens and explains blood collection procedures to patients

Non-essential Functions

  • Assists other staff members during times of increased workload
  • Consults with and advises nursing and coworkers on laboratory issues and topics
  • Participates in quality improvement and competency activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred
  • Experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting preferred
  • Skilled at customer relations and excellent communication skills
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS

Physical Requirements

Light Work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
