Description

Position Summary

Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory testing on blood, body fluids, and tissues in general laboratory disciplines and additional ones for which they have been trained using established laboratory procedures. Medical technologist utilizes equipment and instruments on which maintenance and quality control must be performed. Medical Technologist applies professional knowledge to determine the causes or possible significance of abnormalities and departures from the norm when test results do not conform to expectations.

 

Essential Functions

  • Knowledgeable in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, and urinalysis

  • Performs testing on blood, urine, other body fluids and tissues

  • Performs and interprets quality control procedures utilizing good judgment and implements corrective action when indicated

  • Integrates and relates data generated from a variety of sources while making decisions regarding possible discrepancies

  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment and instruments

  • Adheres to CLIA and TJC Regulatory guidelines when performing tasks

  • Maintains competency for all testing performed by a generalist and in microbiology for those additionally serving as a microbiology tech

Position Requirements

  • Satisfaction of CLIA requirements for personnel performing moderately and highly complex testing including the following:

  1. Associate degree or equivalent defined as:

    a. 60 semester hours including 24 hours of medical laboratory technology

    courses or 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 hours each of

    chemistry and biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical

    laboratory technology, or any combination; and

    b. Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory training

    program, which may be included in the 60 semester hours specified above or

    3 months documented training in each specialty in which the individual

    performs high complexity testing.

    OR

  2. Completion of a 50 week U.S. Military medical laboratory training program or graduation from a medical laboratory or accredited clinical laboratory training program may replace the Associate degree described above.

AND

  1. Passage of the certification exam for MLT (AMT) or MLT (ASCP) or is eligible to sit for and must pass the exam within 6 months of hiring.
  2. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS
