TITLE: Speech Language Pathologist
DEPARTMENT: Rehabilitation Services
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR JOB TITLE: Director of Rehabilitation Services
Position Summary
The Speech Pathologist evaluates and treats all disorders of speech, swallowing, and language for the purpose of preventing, identifying or modifying such disorders and conditions.
Essential Functions
- Evaluates and plans appropriate treatment for disorders of speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing
- Recognizes change in patient’s progress and adjusts the plan accordingly
- Instructs patients in techniques for more effective communication, including sign language, lip reading, and voice improvement
- Teaches patients to control or strengthen tongue, jaw, face muscles and breathing mechanisms
- Uses computer applications to identify and assist communications and disabilities
- Knowledgeable of available test materials and therapeutic techniques
- A thorough case history, functional status, problems and goals are measurable and time framed, treatment plan and rehab potential are documented
- Maintains appropriate documentation which meets the standards and requirements of the department, The Joint Commission, and Center for Medicare Services.
- Presents clear, concise, organized information exchanges and interactions
Non-essential Functions
- Consults with and advises medical staff, nursing, and coworkers on speech and language issues and topics
- Assist other staff members during times of increased workload
- Participates in quality improvement and competency activities
- Performs other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college
- Certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
- License by the Ohio Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS

Physical Requirements.
Light Work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
