TITLE: Oncology RN

DEPARTMENT: Oncology

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR JOB TITLE: Oncology Director

  1. Summary:
    Cares for patients with the diagnosis of cancer and/or hematologic problems in the outpatient clinic and in the inpatient care area as needed. Utilizes a patient centered, empathic and caring approach to patients whose diagnosis and treatment are often painful and life-threatening. Administers chemotherapy, conducts patient teaching, and manages illness and treatment related symptoms.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides supportive care and administration of chemotherapy, blood products, fluid electrolyte replacements, injections, and other oncology treatments as prescribed.
  • Assists the doctor in assessing, developing, coordinating, and revising patient and family educational needs. All new chemotherapy patients receive education by the nurse.
  • Assists the patients with making referrals to PT/OT/Dietician/Palliative/Hospice and completes necessary paperwork to ensure continuation of care.
  • Schedules chemotherapy and follow up appointments in the EMR.
  • Reports concerns, abnormal lab results, and patient symptom complaints to oncologist and follow up with care. Acts as nurse partner if assigned to a physician and carries out duties assigned by the physician.
  • Anticipates complications of chemotherapy and takes action to prevent or minimize the complications.
  • Involves the patient and family in care planning and attempts to establish interventions specific to the individual needs of the patient.
  • Demonstrates skill in venipuncture and skill in the care and use of various venous access devices (i.e. peripheral, PICCS, and ports).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the safe administration of chemotherapy and disposal of chemotherapy wastes and equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the assessment, management, and follow-up care of extravasation.
  • Documents pertinent patient information into the EMR.
  • Checks that laboratory values are within acceptable parameters, assesses if patient is candidate for chemotherapy or injections, and reports results to physician as needed.
  • Checks chemotherapy order for drug, dose, schedule, and route and verifies that original order is transcribed correctly. Assists staff with processing all medication orders.
  • Maintains current certification through continuing education.
  • Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times; Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
  • Other duties as requested or assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Current RN License by the State of Ohio
  • ONS Biotherapy/Chemotherapy Certification or ONS Fundamentals
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal/human relations skills.
  • Ability to cope with death and dying.
  • Ability to apply good clinical judgment.
  • Experience in Oncology Nursing preferred.
