TITLE: Patient Access Clerk

DEPARTMENT: Patient Access

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR JOB TITLE: Patient Access Leader

Position Summary

Responsible for the registration of patients and the operation of the hospital telephone system. To collect accurate patient information to ensure quality patient care and timely revenue cycle functions.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates exemplary customer service skills.
  • Interview patients or relative to obtain personal, statistical, and financial information to accurately register all patients into the electronic medical record.
  • Collect copayments, deductibles, coinsurance, etc. at time of Registration when applicable.
  • Scan all pertinent patient information into the electronic medical record.
  • Operates the hospital telephone switchboard and other communication equipment.

Non-essential Functions

  • Facilitates effective and efficient operation of the Receptionists/Concierge Desk.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent education.
  • Six months prior computer/clerical experience preferred.
  • Six months prior switchboard experience as well as health care, or hospital field experience preferred.
  • Some telephone answering experience and usage of multi-line telephone systems preferred.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally using the English language.
  • Must have the ability to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision, following established hospital policies and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to work closely with physicians, physician’s office staff, hospital staff and patients.

  • Must be able to read and comprehend instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Apply common sense to carry out instructions given in written or oral form.
  • Ability to reason and make critical judgments.
  • Must be mentally alert and detail oriented, capable of dealing with a diversity of tasks and interruptions.
  • Able to organize, prioritize, and perform daily tasks with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to remain calm and functional in a crisis or confrontation.

Physical Requirements

Sedentary Work – Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
